About the Practice
Our attorneys use AI tools responsibly and regularly to work more efficiently, deliver added value to clients, and strengthen their professional development.
In practice, this translates into tangible benefits for clients and the matters we serve.
We leverage AI tools to stand out and deliver exceptional value. Examples include: (1) optimizing workflows for routine tasks; (2) using AI where it is most effective, such as first-pass document review, which allows us to save clients time and money; (3) using AI to gain a competitive advantage in depositions and hearings; and (4) using AI as a training tool to accelerate the development of junior attorneys and sharpen the skill sets of more seasoned attorneys. AI is never used in place of attorney judgment; instead, it is used to improve the quality of our services, whether that is in quality, price, or both.
We were among the first AM Law 200 firms to establish an AI committee and adopt written policies and procedures to address the shifting legal landscape. Client confidentiality has always been of the utmost concern to us, and AI does nothing to change that. Through our careful vetting process, we evaluate each new AI tool for its potential impact on client confidentiality, information security, privilege, work product, or other important protections.
Our attorneys are also actively engaged as thought leaders in this space: thinking, speaking, writing, and otherwise engaging with AI as it develops in the legal sector. Examples include writing articles on how to protect privilege and work product when using these tools, speaking at and organizing CLEs, and being part of leading organizations such as the Sedona Conference Working Group 13.
Our Capabilities
SGR Labs, a dedicated legal-technology group, works alongside our attorneys and clients to design and implement secure, AI-enabled workflows—from patent landscaping and application drafting to document-intensive transactional and litigation matters. Pairing engineers and data specialists with practicing attorneys allows us to build and refine tools around the specific matters our clients bring us, with attorney oversight built into every step.
Our attorneys assist start-up and enterprise clients with their AI policies, license review, and legal governance of their own AI implementation.
Our attorneys utilize AI for document review, building on TAR and CAL technologies that have advanced further with LLMs. In many cases, this AI-driven method can significantly reduce the time and costs of initial review. However, a human remains involved to verify and quality-check the results, as was standard with large document review projects.
AI supports our attorneys during depositions. Using specialized software, we can compare a deponent’s testimony with that of other deponents and with any documents produced during discovery. This tool can identify inconsistencies between testimony and the existing written record, providing attorneys with relevant insights in real time.
All of our attorneys have access to an AI-powered deposition simulator and training tool. AI simulations offer a valuable opportunity for us to develop and hone the skills needed to be effective advocates and negotiators. Rather than relying on “reps” on client matters, we can accelerate our attorneys’ development through AI, enabling meaningful, timely, and realistic training.
SGR Attorneys are thought leaders in the space.
SGR attorneys regularly speak at AI CLEs and seminars and write about the topic. Examples include:
