Joel B. Bruckman

Cyber incidents, privacy questions, and high-stakes disputes rarely arrive at a convenient time. Joel B. Bruckman is brought in to help companies sort through the facts, understand their obligations, and take the next right step—without losing sight of business realities. He is also regularly consulted on emerging artificial intelligence issues, helping clients address new risks before they become headline problems.

Joel advises businesses on cybersecurity and data privacy compliance and represents them in investigations and litigation tied to those issues. His counseling ranges from day-to-day privacy and security program work to urgent incident response. He helps clients set internal rules for collecting and using data, manage vendor relationships, and document decisions in a way that stands up to later scrutiny. As companies adopt AI tools, he also guides leaders on governance, vendor due diligence, and responsible use so teams can innovate while managing privacy, security, and intellectual property concerns.

A former prosecutor and member of the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Task Force, Joel brings an investigation mindset to incident response. He works with internal teams and forensic vendors to develop the record, preserve key evidence, and assess notice and reporting requirements. He also represents clients in regulatory and governmental inquiries that can follow an incident, helping them respond efficiently and consistently.

Joel also litigates trade secret and restrictive covenant disputes, often where technology, data access, and employee movement are at the center of the case. He represents organizations in internal investigations involving insider activity and misuse of confidential information, and he advises on practical safeguards that reduce the risk of loss in the first place. He frequently presents on cybersecurity, data privacy, and emerging AI issues for legal and industry groups and law enforcement audiences.

Before joining SGR (via its combination with Freeborn & Peters in 2023), Joel practiced with Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker, LLP in its Cyber Security & Data Privacy group. He previously served as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, including the Special Prosecutions Bureau – Financial Crimes & Public Corruption Unit, where he led cybercrime training initiatives and worked closely with law enforcement on complex investigations.

Outside of his practice, Joel leads an active lifestyle with his family. He and his wife enjoy traveling, and he is often coaching his two sons in various sports. He also plays guitar when time allows.
