Full Bio
Bill is a USPTO-registered patent attorney with more than 25 years of experience. With a background in aerospace engineering, Bill advises clients on protecting and leveraging innovations across complex engineering and emerging technology environments. Bill’s practice focuses on U.S. and international patent prosecution and strategic portfolio management, including invention mining, patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses, and counseling on patent versus trade secret strategies. He has prosecuted hundreds of patent applications across a wide range of technologies, including aerospace and mechanical systems, electrical and computer hardware/software, automation, AI/ML and GenAI-enabled products, IoT, medical devices, and advanced optics and laser-based technologies. He works closely with engineers, product leaders, and R&D teams to align IP strategy with product roadmaps and business objectives, translating intricate technical concepts into strong, commercially meaningful protection.
In addition to prosecution and counseling, Bill has substantial experience supporting corporate transactions. He regularly leads intellectual property due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investments, identifying risk, confirming ownership and chain of title, and evaluating portfolio strength and value. He also drafts and negotiates IP provisions and agreements, including licensing, joint development, technology transfer, manufacturing, and supply arrangements, and provides trademark prosecution and brand strategy support as needed.
Bill previously served as Principal and Engineering Team Lead at Johnson, Marcou, Isaacs & Nix, LLC and was a Senior Associate at King & Spalding LLP. He also serves as a Lieutenant Commander and Judge Advocate in the United States Navy Reserve. He earned his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Virginia, and his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Oklahoma.
