About William

William “Bill” O. Isaacs helps companies protect and leverage innovation in complex, technology-driven industries. Drawing on more than 28 years of experience and a background in aerospace engineering, he works closely with engineers, product leaders, and in-house counsel to translate technical concepts into practical intellectual property strategies that support business goals.

Bill advises clients day to day on building, managing, and using IP portfolios to create long-term value. His practice focuses on U.S. and international patent prosecution, invention mining, and portfolio strategy, as well as patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses. He also counsels clients on when to pursue patent protection versus trade secret strategies, helping them make informed decisions that align with product development and commercialization plans.

He has prosecuted hundreds of patent applications across a broad range of technologies, including aerospace and mechanical systems, software and AI-driven products, automation, IoT, medical devices, and advanced optical and laser systems. Clients rely on him to align IP strategy with product roadmaps and to anticipate challenges as technologies evolve.

In addition, Bill regularly supports mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investments by leading intellectual property due diligence, assessing portfolio strength, and identifying risks related to ownership and scope. He also drafts and negotiates IP-related agreements, including licensing, joint development, technology transfer, and supply arrangements, and advises on trademark protection and brand strategy.

Outside his legal practice, Bill serves as a Judge Advocate in the United States Navy Reserve, where he advises on a range of legal and operational matters. He also enjoys spending time with his family and staying active outdoors through hiking, camping, and boating.
