LONDON (April 20, 2026) — Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (“SGR”) is pleased to announce the arrival of David Russell as Counsel in the Firm’s Litigation and International Arbitration practices.
“David is a strong addition to our London disputes team,” said Patrick Swain, Partner and leader of SGR’s U.K. Commercial Disputes team. “He brings valuable experience in complex, high-value litigation and international arbitration, particularly in matters involving detailed financial and valuation issues. His background as both a barrister and a former investment banker adds a practical dimension that will benefit our clients and complement our existing capabilities in the U.K.”
David Russell helps businesses resolve high-stakes, complex and/or cross-border disputes. He has worked on some of England’s most prominent commercial cases of recent years, and advises clients across the full lifecycle of English litigation and international commercial arbitration: from initial strategy and risk assessment through to alternative dispute resolution, trial and appeal. His practice spans breach of contract, civil fraud, product liability and defamation, across industries including financial services, insurance, media, automotive, aviation, property and construction.
Russell combines the courtroom authority of a practising English barrister with the strategic judgment of a former investment banker. Before law, he spent several years in corporate finance, and he continues to hold the Chartered Finance Analyst designation. He is therefore deeply familiar with deal structures and valuation methodologies, and adept at translating technical financial or accounting data into persuasive legal arguments. In short, he is especially effective for clients facing disputes where numbers tell the story, or where damages quantum is a key issue.
Opened in 2017, SGR’s London and Southampton offices are home to robust global transportation and litigation practices comprised of experienced practitioners in the U.K. working collaboratively with lawyers situated primarily across the firm’s U.S. offices in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte and Miami. Russell’s arrival continues the strategic expansion of the Firm’s dispute resolution capabilities in the U.K., which have developed with the recent additions of partners Gordon McAllister, Simon Kilgour and Swain.
