Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP’s Intellectual Property Group Secures Favorable Decision for Client Redbeet Interactive AB

ATLANTA, Ga. (December 10, 2025) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP is pleased to announce that Partners Scott Woldow and Elizabeth Borland recently secured a favorable decision for their client, Redbeet Interactive AB, a game studio based in Sweden.

This case involved two parties who each claimed to have been the first to develop rights in the U.S. regarding the trademark “RAFT” for computer games.  Three university students (who ultimately formed Redbeet) developed a computer game called “RAFT” as part of their degree in game design.  RAFT was named as one of the most successful games on the Steam game platform in 2018, and the RAFT game has continued to have significant success following its debut.

However, a few months after the initial prototype of the RAFT game was released for free download on the itch.io game platform in late 2016 and became the top game on that platform, a Russian individual released a “RAFT” game for mobile devices and registered the standard-character mark in the U.S. This individual’s “RAFT” game is virtually identical to Redbeet’s RAFT game.

After several years of discovery, cross-motions for summary judgment, and other pre-trial skirmishing, the court granted SGR’s petition to cancel the RAFT trademark registration on Redbeet’s behalf, securing a favorable outcome for the client.
