ATLANTA (January 24, 2019) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that Partner and New York City Bar Association President Roger Juan Maldonado has been selected as one of The Responsible 100 for 2018 by City and State New York magazine. Mr. Maldonado was recognized at an awards luncheon on December 18 at Sony Hall in New York in appreciation for his leadership of the New York City Bar Association (City Bar) where he works to ensure the rule of law applies to all.

The Responsible 100 honors New York's most outstanding responsible executives, thought leaders, visionaries and influencers who have set new standards of excellence, dedication and leadership in improving their communities and making transformative change. Honorees embody one or more of the Core Principles of Corporate Social Responsibility: Charity, Diversity, Environment & Sustainability, Equity, Ethics, Privacy, Sourcing, Transparency, Volunteerism and Community Engagement. Mr. Maldonado was elected as the 68th president of the City Bar in May 2018 and is the organization’s first Hispanic president. As a priority of his term, he committed “to continue the City Bar’s work to ensure the protection of the interests of the vulnerable and to preserve the basic rights of all, not only the rights of those fortunate to have the independent means to access the courts and petition government.”

As the former chair of the City Bar’s Task Force on Puerto Rico and a native of Puerto Rico, he also continues to support its core mission to monitor Puerto Rico’s current fiscal crisis. In August 2018, Mr. Maldonado, along with the New York State Bar Association President Michael Miller, collaborated to build support for the resolution which asked Congress to exempt Puerto Rico from the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (the Jones Act) to assist the U.S. territory in its efforts to rebuild after Hurricane Maria.

A Partner in SGR’s New York Litigation Practice, Mr. Maldonado has a 35-year legal career as a trial lawyer and commercial litigator. He represents musicians, publishers, and record labels in litigation to enforce their copyrights and contractual rights. In addition, Mr. Maldonado assists corporate and commercial institutions in litigation involving claims arising from software development/license disputes, lease agreements, and contract disputes. Fluent in Spanish, he represents the interests of various Hispanic and American businesses, government entities and individuals, and to investigate allegations of corporate wrongdoing and discriminatory employment practices.
