Press Release

PR-EmoryLaw@Work

ATLANTA (June 9, 2022) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that the Firm has been named the 2022 winner of Emory University School of Law’s annual EmoryLaw@Work Campaign in the large category for attaining the highest participation rate of gift giving by its Emory Law School alumni. From January 1 through April 30, EmoryLaw@Work challenges participating law firms to encourage the firm’s alumni colleagues to make a donation, or “gift,” to the Law School Fund of Excellence with the goal of 100% alumni participation. Participating firms are categorized into three challenge groups of small, medium and large based on the number of Emory Law alumni in the firm. The winners, those that achieved the highest alumni participation rate in each category, were announced at the Alumni Awards ceremony on May 20 during Emory Law Alumni Weekend. SGR Partner and Emory University School of Law graduate John Ethridge accepted the award on behalf of the Firm.

For more than 20 years, the EmoryLaw@Work program’s mission has been to strengthen relationships with its alumni by connecting with them through workplaces and law firms. Partnerships with participating law firms help the law school remain relevant for alumni, keep pace with economic trends, and stay abreast of contemporary legal practice. The gifts made support Emory law students by providing funding for scholarships, academic programs and initiatives, faculty support and research, student organizations and activities, professional development and career services, and public interest programs. This year’s campaign raised nearly $140,000 from just under 130 gifts.

SGR counts Emory Law among one of its most influential long-term partnerships, and the Firm has continually supported the university through its contributions in the spirit of name partner E. Smythe Gambrell. Mr. Gambrell served on Emory’s law faculty in the late 1920s and 1930s while also practicing law in Atlanta. In memory of his parents, he provided the lead gift for the building that houses the law school, known as Gambrell Hall, which opened in 1973, and Gambrell Drive is named for him. In 2018, the Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP Suite in the Center for Professional Development and Career Strategy was dedicated in recognition of the Firm’s contribution to the university during the law school’s centennial year. One third of SGR attorneys are graduates of Emory Law, and several of the Firm’s partners serve as Emory Law adjunct professors.
