About the Practice

SGR Labs brings together practicing lawyers, engineers, and software developers to deliver practical technology inside a full‑service law firm. Working within Smith Gambrell & Russell’s internationally recognized platform across more than 50 practice areas, we focus on workflows that make legal work faster, clearer, and more actionable—using AI where it helps, and craftsmanship everywhere else.

How We Work

We embed beside client-specific teams and SGR practice groups, map the current process, and stand up a working lane that people can actually use. We start small, measure cycle time and quality, and expand only when the path is proven. Security, audit trails, and role‑appropriate views are designed from the outset, so status is visible without extra meetings and completions are evidenced, not assumed.

Software Implementation

Software implementation means selecting and integrating the right tools so lawyers and clients benefit from modern workflows without trading off risk or security. Within the SGR Labs platform we enable secure research and collaboration, connect matter data to day‑to‑day work, and support structured review and approvals. Interfaces are tailored to the audience—attorneys, in‑house counsel, engineers, or executives—so each sees what they need in a format they can use.

Data Analytics

Data informs strategy and budgets. By analyzing matter history, reviewer patterns, counterpart behavior, and throughput, we identify where standardization improves outcomes. The result is practical guidance and current budget projections that help teams plan with confidence and defend their spend—turning dashboards into decisions rather than decoration.

Automation

We automate repeatable steps so attorneys can focus on judgment. Templates, validations, and workflow routing come first; AI‑assisted drafting or review enters specific steps where it shortens time‑to‑first‑draft and remains under attorney oversight. High‑stakes matters still receive bespoke attention; routine work becomes consistently excellent.

Illustrative Example: Patent Drafting

SGR Infographic

The diagram shows three synchronized lanes. Workflow management (green) anchors the lane with the SGR Diligence Team, an in‑house patent‑landscape step, and the SGR Labs software suite—ensuring requisite materials for intake and keeping evidence, timers, and routing in one place. The work‑product lane (blue) moves from Patent Claims to Draft Application to a Client‑Ready Draft, with hybrid automated compliance to best practices and client procedures along the way. Overlaid is review and QC (orange): partner‑level drafting/review, team drafting, and a final QC and partner review. Across the top and bottom, the controls are explicit: required details are included, client procedures are followed, claims are drafted in light of prior art, and statutory compliance/QC flags surface early rather than after the fact.

Put simply, the same workflow that produces the document also records the decisions, deadlines, and checks that where applied — so status and quality are visible without a separate reporting layer.

Engagement & Pricing

To keep costs predictable, we work with SGR attorneys and clients to develop appropriate fee arrangements with defined scope for appropriate situations, fixed‑fee menus for common packages, and traditional billing for bespoke or mission‑critical work.  As workflows mature, costs stabilize and scale responsibly.

Our Mission

Equip SGR attorneys—and the clients they serve—with effective, secure workflows that elevate legal work and client experience from early‑stage needs through scaled, complex matters.
