ATLANTA (October 16, 2023) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that Partner Roger Juan Maldonado has received a New York Law Journal 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award. Recognized for his accomplishments and impact on the legal community and the practice of law over his 40-year career, Mr. Maldonado was honored on October 4 during the New York Law Journal’s award celebration in Manhattan.
“SGR is very proud of Roger’s countless contributions to the legal profession and for his tireless efforts to ensure the preservation the basic rights of all,” said John McCarthy, managing partner of SGR’s New York office. “He has distinguished himself as a litigator, a leader of the Bar and a member of many professional, community and philanthropic organizations and committees.”
Mr. Maldonado is past president of the New York City Bar Association (City Bar), and as a native of Puerto Rico, he was the organization’s first Hispanic president. While president and vice president of the City Bar and as a member of its executive committee, he worked with many City Bar committees on reports, programs and advocacy designed to improve access to justice for all New York State residents, and to ensure that elected officials adhered to the Rule of Law.
Since 2022, Mr. Maldonado has led the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s “Fareness” Blue Ribbon Panel as its co-chair and is tasked with addressing the city’s public transportation fare evasion issue through “education, equity, and enforcement.” Mr. Maldonado also serves on the Commercial Division Advisory Council, on the New York State Institute on Professionalism in the Law, as vice president of the board of directors of United Neighborhood House, and as member of the Commission to Reimagine the Future of New York Courts.
Mr. Maldonado has been named to City & State New York magazine’s 2023 and 2022 Transportation Power 100, The 2020 Power of Diversity: Latino 100, The 2020 Law Power 100, The 2019 Law Power 50, and The 2018 Responsible 100.
A partner in SGR’s New York Litigation Practice, Mr. Maldonado represents, counsels and advises businesspeople, in-house counsel, governmental entities, and others in the resolution of complex legal matters. His practice includes commercial, real estate, and intellectual property litigation, as well as employment and education law.
