Smith Gambrell Russell Launches International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Practice

International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Practice

ATLANTA (January 17, 2024) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) is pleased to announce that it has created a new International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Practice, formed by the consolidation of its international arbitration and other international dispute resolution matters under a single umbrella. The move is part of a firmwide effort to provide high-quality, efficient client service following last year’s combination with Freeborn & Peters.

SGR combined with Freeborn on April 1, 2023. Prior to that, Freeborn maintained a dedicated international arbitration practice, which had extensive experience representing domestic and international ceding companies and reinsurers in international arbitrations. SGR also represented its clients in international arbitrations in various industries, with a focus on international construction and aviation disputes.

“The creation of this new practice group recognizes the uniqueness of international arbitration and dispute resolution from its domestic counterpart,” said Stephen M. Forte, SGR’s chairman and managing partner. “SGR has represented clients around the world in international arbitrations for many years now, and as part of our recent growth, which included the expansion of our geographic reach, it made sense to build out our International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Practice in a way that best serves our clients.”

Joseph T. McCullough IV, former chair of Freeborn’s Executive Committee and member of the SGR Executive Committee, added: “Many of us who joined SGR as a result of the combination with Freeborn have represented domestic and international insurance companies and reinsurers in international insurance and reinsurance arbitrations in the United States and abroad for decades. This area was a cornerstone of Freeborn’s international arbitration practice. Our combination with SGR expanded each firm’s geographic reach and the depth of knowledge and experience in various industries. With the combined firm already providing international arbitration and dispute resolution advice and representation to clients engaged in transborder business in various market sectors, the next logical step was to ensure that all our clients, in all industries, benefit from having knowledgeable and experienced international arbitration and dispute resolution counsel.”
