Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP (SGR) received high marks in the latest survey of summer associates conducted by L Magazine. Of 188 firms, SGR ranked number one in the country as the firm staffed with attorneys students would most enjoy working with on a daily basis. SGR ranked second in the nation as being the right size for a law firm.
In the 2003 rankings, SGR rose to 49th after ranking 161st in 2001. SGR made one of the biggest jumps in overall rankings for law firms, moving up 112 spots in two years, making the Atlanta-based firm one of the nation’s top 50 firms for summer associates.
SGR’s leap in the survey coincided with the launch of its Case in Point leadership training program for summer associates. The program assisted law students in gaining real-world experience and exposure to some of the Southeast’s leading business and political leaders.

This year’s 4,503 respondents had a distinct set of priorities. The group of law students who summered at a combined 188 law firms cared less about fancy social events, perks, fat paychecks, and benefits. Particulars, such as a firm’s location and diversity also appeared much less important than in years past. Ultimately, summer associates surveyed wanted assurance that they would get a high level of responsibility during the summer, and the ability to do meaningful and intellectually challenging work, including pro bono projects. Based upon the results of the survey, SGR provides the right balance that will prepare great law students to become great attorneys.
