ATLANTA (November 20, 2008) — Smith, Gambrell & Russell’s esteemed senior partner, colleague and friend, Alex (A.W.) Smith passed away on November 19th at the age of 85.

A native of Atlanta, Mr. Smith attended the college of the Holy Cross and the University of Georgia, receiving his B.B.A. Degree in 1947 and his LL.B. Degree in 1949, the same year that he joined the Firm. Prior to entering college, he served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the U.S., England and France.
During his long and distinguished career with the Firm, Mr. Smith devoted a great deal of his time and attention to civic and religious activities in the community. He was a member of the Executive Committee and founding President of Central Atlanta Progress and, for eight years, served on the State Board of Transportation. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Georgia Foundation and a Director of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Mr. Smith was General Counsel of the Catholic Archdiocese, Chairman of its Atlanta Finance Council and Chairman of various campaigns in support of the Archdiocese.
Mr. Smith was a teacher and role model to many. His family, friends and colleagues mourn his loss.
