DOT and EPA Issue Joint Proposed Rule for Light Duty Vehicles

On September 28, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) jointly issued a proposed rule to establish light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas (GHG) standards and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards. These standards, if finalized, would apply to passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles for model years (MY) 2012 through 2016. This rulemaking may also impose enormous costs – perhaps more than $60 billion during MYs 2012-2016 – on vehicle manufacturers during challenging economic times.

For more information on this proposed rule and how it may affect your business if finalized, please access SGR’s client alert HERE or contact Lisa Branch, Steve O’Day, Phillip Hoover, or your SGR counsel. Public comments to the proposed rulemaking are due on or before November 27, 2009.
