Steve O’Day Honored with Award for Service to the Profession of Environmental Law

ATLANTA (March 7, 2014) – Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP Partner Stephen E. O’Day is this year’s recipient of the Award for Service to the Profession of Environmental Law presented by the State Bar of Georgia, Environmental Law Section. Mr. O’Day is a former Vice Chairman of the Section, and has served as an active member for over 30 years.

The award recognizes the critical role that lawyers play in protecting and managing Georgia’s natural resources, whether that role is as an advocate for the protection of those natural resources, or as an advocate for clients navigating the complex world of environmental regulation.  Each year, the award is presented to an individual who is experienced and highly skilled in the area of environmental law, is committed to ethics and professionalism, and serves as a role model for younger and aspiring environmental attorneys.

Mr. O’Day is the Partner in charge of SGR’s Environmental Law and the Sustainability Practices. He has handled environmental litigation, consultation and negotiations for more than 34 years. His practice includes environmental litigation, regulatory practice, and transactional work involving all the federal and state environmental laws protecting our air, water and land from harmful pollution.  His work in sustainability involves advising clients on regulatory, transactional, and corporate policy matters in the development and implementation of programs in business, environmental and social sustainability. In addition to this award, Mr. O’Day has been recognized for his work through receiving the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s highest honor, the River Guardian Award, for years of community service in protecting the river that provides Metropolitan Atlanta’s water supply, as well as the James S. Dockery, Jr. Southern Environmental Leadership Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center, and the Ogden Doremus Award for Excellence in Environmental Law presented by GreenLaw.
