Smith Gambrell Russell’s Mark Leventhal Named Airfinance Journal Rising Star

ATLANTA (May 2, 2024) – SGR is pleased to announce that Mark Leventhal has been named one of Airfinance Journal’s Rising Stars, one of only six practitioners worldwide to receive this honor. The publication noted that Leventhal’s extensive experience allows him to advise clients on all facets of aircraft financing and leasing transactions.

Since 1979, Airfinance Journal has provided in-depth coverage of commercial aviation finance transactions and participants including manufacturers, air traffic management, leasing companies, airlines, airports, and more. The inaugural Rising Stars awards spotlights six exceptional Aviation finance lawyers around the world.

“We salute Mark on this well-deserved recognition,” said Peter Barlow, Head of the Firm’s Global Transport Practice. “He quickly became a key member of the SGR aviation practice, both with respect to the handling of complex transactions and furthering our client relationships. We very much look forward to his continued contributions to our team and our clients as he builds his practice.”

Leventhal is based in the New York office of SGR, is English law qualified (with New York Legal Consultant status), and works in the finance and leasing sector, specializing primarily on structured and asset finance and leasing in the aviation sector. His experience includes acting for operating lessors, export credit agencies, airlines and banks on a broad range of cross-border finance and leasing transactions, including export credit supported financings, cross-border leasing, pre-delivery financings, tax-based structures, and joint venture leasing transactions.

SGR’s Global Transport (Aviation) Practice commenced in 1927 with its representation of the predecessor to Eastern Airlines and began to prosper alongside the ascent of Eastern Airlines. For over 60 years, Smith Gambrell Russell served as Eastern’s general external legal counsel and represented the airline in virtually all aspects of its business until its sale to Texas Air in 1989. During the years since its inception, the group has greatly broadened its industry representation to include other airlines, finance, and operating lessors, export credit agencies, financiers, aviation equipment owners, managers and investors, aviation joint ventures and joint venture partners, maintenance repair and overhaul facilities and aircraft teardown/part-out companies.
