Michael D. Friedman is a Counsel in the Corporate Practice of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.
Michael Friedman’s practice focuses on corporate, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, project finance, real estate, and transnational transactions. As general counsel to his clients, Mr. Friedman brings a creative approach to solving corporate and business problems and specializes in complex domestic and international corporate, commercial and real estate transactions and representation of domestic and foreign high net worth individuals and their business ventures in the U.S. and abroad.
Mr. Friedman is also an active commercial arbitrator and is a member of the American Arbitration Association’s Roster of Commercial Arbitrators. He has acted as sole arbitrator and as chairman and/or member of arbitration panels in more than 150 cases involving disputes among partners and/or shareholders in business and professional relationships, professional sports relationships, scope of insurance coverage, contract interpretation, and claims arising out of acquisition and/or merger transactions, securities transactions, franchises, and commercial real estate deals. Additionally, Mr. Friedman is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, an elite, invitation-only membership which defines and promotes excellence in arbitration.
Mr. Friedman is a member of the New York State Bar Association, American Bar Association and Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He received his A.B. from Columbia College and his J.D. from New York University, where he was a member of the New York University Law Review. Mr. Friedman obtained his LL.M. in East Asian Law from Harvard University. Early in his career he practiced law for 3 years with a Chinese-American law firm in Taipei, Taiwan.
When not practicing law, Mr. Friedman enjoys sailing and scuba diving, as he has a passion for the water. He is a United Coast Guard licensed Master. Additionally, he is the former National Law Officer (General Counsel) for the United States Power Squadrons, a nation-wide non-profit educational and public service organization founded in 1914, whose mission is to educate and promote recreational boating safety and enjoyment.
