In his role as Managing Partner and Chairman, Steve oversees the strategic growth and direction of the firm by cultivating strong relationships with clients and the community. As a leader, he understands the importance of being connected to the business community in order to develop a strategy for the anticipated business needs of the firm’s clients. Prior to being elected Managing Partner in 1994, Steve served in other leadership positions within the firm. As a visionary leader, he has always been active with attorney recruiting and the professional development of young attorneys.
With more than 35 years of legal experience, Steve has maintained a full-time litigation practice in addition to his leadership responsibilities. His trial practice is broad based, having been lead counsel in over 200 major adversary proceedings, including jury and bench trials, arbitrations and appeals. Much of his work in recent years has been focused on class action defense and nationwide complex litigation in the representation of financial institutions and clients in the telecommunications and transportation industries. Steve regularly represents major airlines in litigation worldwide.
Steve has been recognized five consecutive years in Chambers USA as one of the outstanding commercial litigators in the country and a dynamic trial attorney. He has been selected by Georgia Super Lawyers and noted in the Best Lawyers in America several years running for Commercial Litigation. In addition, he currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He is a frequent lecturer with Emory University on Italian culture.
Steve has authored several articles, including “What the Attorney-Client Privilege Really Means,” “The Uses and Forms of ADR in the U.S.,” and “The Warsaw Convention in the Electronic Age.”
Prior to joining Smith, Gambrell & Russell, he was a Special Assistant to the Attorney General of Georgia for civil litigation matters.
