Tracie J. Maurer
Tracie J. Maurer is a partner in the Litigation Section of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.
Her practice focuses in the area of employment law, exclusively representing employers.
Ms. Maurer has significant expertise and experience in employment law, which encompasses employment discrimination and litigation, employment contracts, employee handbooks and policies, termination and separations, hiring practices, wage and hour issues, disability and leave issues, unemployment compensation, negotiating executive employment agreements, and other aspects of the employer-employee relationship governed by state and federal laws. Ms. Maurer regularly counsels clients on state and federal compliance issues as well as best practices for dispute avoidance. She frequently conducts training seminars for managers, supervisors and employees on various employment law issues.
Ms. Maurer has represented employers before numerous governmental agencies including, among others, The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Georgia Department of Labor; Florida Commission on Human Relations; South Carolina Human Affairs Commission; Ohio Human Rights Commission; Tennessee Human Rights Commission; New York State Division of Human Rights; Virginia Council on Human Rights; California Fair Employment & Housing Division; City of Champaign (IL) Human Relations Commission; and City of Alexandria (VA) Office of Human Rights; the Wage and Hour Division of the United States Department of Labor; and the Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.
In litigation, Ms. Maurer exclusively represents employers. She regularly litigates cases before state and federal courts of Georgia, and has litigated matters pending in federal courts of Florida, Colorado, Illinois, and Missouri.
Ms. Maurer graduated in 1986 with an A.B. in psychology from the University of Michigan. She pursued post-baccalaureate studies in middle grades education at Clark-Atlanta and Georgia State Universities, maintaining a place on the Deans’ Lists for both schools. In 1996, Ms. Maurer received her J.D. from the University of Georgia, where she served as Executive Chairperson of the Moot Court Board; President of the Black Law Students Association; and was elected to the Order of the Barristers and the Lumpkin Inn of Court. Prior to entering law school, Ms. Maurer worked several years as an educator in the Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina public school systems.
Ms. Maurer has been named to “Who’s Who in Black Atlanta;” selected as a “Rising Super Lawyer;” served on Board of Directors for Literacy Volunteers of America; chaired the University of Georgia’s Younger Lawyers Alumni Committee; member of Legal Redress Committee, Atlanta Chapter of NAACP; recently selected as a contributing legal columnist for The Atlanta Tribune magazine; and guest speaker at schools, community and other civic organizations.
Ms. Maurer is admitted to practice before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Georgia, the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals. Ms. Maurer is a member of the State Bar of Georgia.
