Nigamnarayan Acharya

Nigamnarayan (“Nigam”) Acharya is an associate in the Intellectual Property Section of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.

Mr. Acharya is a registered patent attorney who practices in the areas of patent, trademark and copyright prosecution and counseling, licensing and litigation.

Mr. Acharya has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the chemical, biochemical, mechanical, and business method arts, as well as provided new product clearance, due diligence, and patentability. He has assisted numerous acquisitions and divestures involving due diligence for intellectual property assets and also has extensive experience preparing patent validity and patentability opinions. Further, Mr. Acharya has prepared patent certifications for Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDA).

Mr. Acharya has also assisted technology and brand owners and developers in protecting their intellectual property and aiding venture capital sources in due diligence matters relating to intellectual property. He has a depth of knowledge and experience in trademark prosecution, trademark counseling, and trademark clearance opinions. In addition, he has represented clients in trademark appeals, oppositions, and cancellations before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Prior to earning a law degree, Mr. Acharya gained valuable experience conducting research in biophysical chemistry involving the quantifying the thermodynamics (energetics) and kinetics of interaction between DNA cation and DNA protein interactions. More specifically, this research involved studying site specific interactions between DNA binding proteins and their target sequences in relation to the expression and replication of genetic information.

Mr. Acharya received his B.S. degree, with honors, in 1998 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with majors in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Political Science. He earned his J.D. degree from Emory University.

Mr. Acharya is a member of the Georgia Bar Association.
