Neal T. Dorman is a Partner in the Corporate and Private Wealth Services Practices of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.
Neal is passionate about the roots of Rock & Roll, convertible roadsters, and hand-crafted microbrews; fortunately, not all three at the same time, nor when he is practicing law.
Neal Dorman knows that clients’ lives, and their legal needs, are multifaceted and rarely easily compartmentalized into discrete departments or practice groups. As a member of the Firm’s Executive Committee, Neal works to ensure that the Firm’s practice groups collaborate regularly to provide clients with the most effective representation possible. His areas of focus include Corporate Law as well as Tax and Trusts & Estates. He has been included in the Super Lawyers directory for several years running among the best attorneys as selected by peers and independent research. As general counsel to and director of numerous privately held corporations and counsel to entrepreneurs, their businesses and families, Neal practices general corporate and commercial law, including business organization, commercial transactions, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, bank and private placement financings and secured transactions.
In the area of trusts and estates, Neal represents individuals regarding estate planning and drafting, including the preparation of wills and trusts. His experience also encompasses all stages of administration of estates and trusts, from probate proceedings, administration of decedents’ estates, tax proceedings, tax audits and appeals through accountings. Neal also serves as executor and trustee for a number of estates and trusts, an indication of the close relationship he enjoys with many clients. In the town of New Castle, Chappaqua, New York, he served as Town Board Member and counsel to the Hidden Hollow Association and as counsel to and a member of the Citizens’ Emergency Response Team. Similarly, around the office we all know Neal is ready to rock and ready to respond to any legal crisis.
Neal is a member of the New York State Bar Association and serves on the Corporate & Banking Law and Trust & Estates Committees. He received his B.A. from Union College in 1967 with honors, and his J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1971, where he was selected as a member of the Journal of International Law and Politics. He is admitted to practice in New York and U.S. Tax Court.
Neal is married to Helen Dorman, a Cornell graduate, previously an ocularist and currently an accomplished Real Estate broker in Chappaqua, NY. They have two daughters: Karen L. Kipnes, a graduate of Cornell University with a J.D. from Benjamin Cardoza School of Law, and Deborah L. Grishman, a graduate of Cornell University with an MBA from Columbia University School of Business. They are also proud grandparents to five. He and his family live in New Castle, New York where he loves to go for long drives with the top down while listening to Elvis and Motown. The microbrews await him at home.
