Dana Hustins is an associate in the Intellectual Property Section of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP. Mr. Hustins’ practice is divided between patent prosecution and litigation. He has prosecuted patents related to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) monitoring systems, internet authentication devices, point-of-sale (POS) processing systems, and internet browser and messaging systems. His litigation experiences include assisting in the defense of a major cell phone carrier against patent infringement claims.
Prior to earning his law degree, Mr. Hustins worked as a software engineer for several large corporations including EDS, CheckFree, and IBM. As an EDS consultant, Mr. Hustins developed a Java-based Geographic Information System (GIS) internet application to enable the U. S. Centers for Disease Control to track acute hazardous waste spills and study the related health effects. At CheckFree Corp., he was major contributor to the development of CheckFree’s online bill payment software for large financial customers including Bank of America. Prior to that, Mr. Hustins developed middleware components for IBM’s System/390 mainframe computers. In addition, he was a software engineer at two start-up companies, developing financial risk management software for utility companies and document processing software for industrial tool manufacturers.
Mr. Hustins received his B.S. in Computer Engineering, with highest honor, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he graduated first in his class and was a member of Eta Kappa Nu. He earned his J.D. degree, with honors, from the Emory University School of Law. During law school, Mr. Hustins was a summer clerk for the Honorable C. Christopher Hagy, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Georgia.
Mr. Hustins is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
