David J. Burge

David J. Burge is a Partner in the Real Estate Practice at Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP.

Mr. Burge has substantial experience in commercial real estate lending transactions, corporate real estate transactions, capital markets real estate transactions and general real estate sale, purchase and leasing transactions. He represents several national and regional financial institutions in their real estate finance transactions in Georgia and throughout the Southeast. Mr. Burge also has particular expertise in the financing, acquisition and management of timberland and recreational properties, including golf courses and marinas. He has represented the purchasers in several complex in-town land assemblages.

In 2007, Governor Perdue appointed Mr. Burge to the Board of the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority and in 2008, Governor Perdue appointed Mr. Burge to be a Consumer Member of the Georgia Real Estate Commission. He served as Chairman of both the Real Estate Section of the Atlanta Bar Association (1999-2000) and the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia (2006-2007). He has served as a Board Member of the University of North Carolina Law School Atlanta Alumni Council and is active with the Boy Scouts of America, the Urban Land Institute, the Peachtree Heights East Civic Association and the Atlanta Vanderbilt Club. He is a board member of the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and in 2006, he received the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award, the Boy Scouts’ highest award for service to youth. He is a graduate of the 2001 Midtown Alliance Leadership Program and the 2006 Coverdell Leadership Institute.

Prior to private practice, Mr. Burge served as a judicial clerk for Judge Albert J. Henderson, Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Mr. Burge earned his B.A. in history and political science, magna cum laude, from Vanderbilt University in 1982. Mr. Burge received his J.D., with high honors, from the University of North Carolina in 1985 and was First Honors graduate of his class. During law school, he served as Articles Editor of the North Carolina Law Review, received the William T. Joyner Law Review Writing Award and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He is the author of two notes, “Defining an Employer’s Liability under Title VII for on-the-Job Sexual Harassment,” 62 North Carolina Law Review 795 (1984) and “Statutory Protection against Condominium Conversions,” 62 North Carolina Law Review 1346 (1984).
